Steve Anthony, Sr. owner of Legacy Construction, Inc. had a unique vision for a new kind of development in our area. When International Paper began selling property holdings a few years ago, Steve acquired the Buckwalter tract, and he eagerly began making plans for Rose Dhu Creek Plantation. Steve wanted to incorporate as much natural beauty into his development as possible.
Wanting to move away from architectural review boards and lots of building restrictions, Steve wanted to offer a different kind of lifestyle for families of all ages and stages. He wanted people to “be able to enjoy the many offerings of the great outdoors.” Since the Rose Dhu property had a creek, lots of trees, and abundant wildlife, it perfectly suited Steve’s dream.
Rose Dhu Creek Plantation is situated on May River Road (Highway 46) in Bluffton. Comprised of three phases (the first two are now sold out), there are a total of 116 lots on approximately 320 acres, making it a true “low density project.” Residents share a love of the environment, whether it is being by the water, in the woods, riding horses, fishing, walking or boating. Rose Dhu residents enjoy lots of privacy and security in a natural setting.
Rose Dhu residents Chris and Tyna Crowe love the tranquil setting and fun environment for their children. Daughter Katie, 10, and son Matt, 7, can play safely in their community and mom and dad don’t have to worry. Tyna also enjoys the abundant wildlife. She says it is commonplace to see wild turkeys, deer, and of course, horses, around the neighborhood. The Crowes have lived in Rose Dhu for about two years, and say it always feels like home when they enter their plantation.
Fellow resident Katherine Cook, of Katherine Cook Interiors, says it was “love at first sight” when she visited Rose Dhu Creek. She loves the open spaces and privacy afforded by the community. Katharine’s background in decorating and horses was a natural fit for Rose Dhu Creek. After nearly two years, it still makes her happy to come home each day. Originally from Savannah, Katharine has lived in this area for about thirty years. Katharine feels that Rose Dhu Creek epitomizes the spirit of the Lowcountry. And she can’t imagine living anywhere else. Katharine says it’s wonderful to drive in and folks riding around on horses. She also relished the opportunity to sit outside and hear the crickets, birds, and other wildlife greeting her each morning. Katharine says it the “prefect way to start the day.”
Several residents have laughingly commented that horses have distinct personalities, just like people. They report that they have been able to get to know the various personalities of the horses, and it adds to the charm of Rose Dhu Creek, for resident of all ages.
Rose Dhu Creek has over 6.5 miles of established riding trails. The trails are well-maintained by the equestrian facility management. The trails run in and around the plantation, and also run along the banks of Rose Dhu Creek, the marshes, and freshwater and salt conservation areas.
The Rose Dhu Equestrian Center is privately owned by Steve Anthony, Sr. but is open to the public. Horse riding lessons are available, along with boarding options, and you can even lease a horse. Horse shows and other meets will be scheduled on a regular basis, along with comprehensive activities for both youth and adult riders.
