Palmetto Hall Plantation, Hilton Head |

Palmetto Hall Plantation is located on the north end of the island off Beach City Road near historic Mitchelville, Palmetto Hall Plantation is one of Greenwood Development’s most popular communities. What began as a semi-private golf club community, attracting full- and part-time residents from all over, has become a community with more than 200 families living among its two golf courses and nature preserve. Robbie Bunting, a real estate agent who specializes in Palmetto Hall, and whose family was one of the community’s first residents, explained that although all the original building lots have been purchased, the resale market remains very active and strong. “There was a time we knew everyone and everyone knew us. I find I sometimes have to introduce myself, which is good. It means our growing community is thriving,” he said.
In January 1990, Palmetto Hall Plantation began operations with inaugural rounds on one of its two highly regarded golf courses, the Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall. The Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall debuted in March of 1993, followed by the opening of the 14,000-square-foot clubhouse in April 1996. In the spring of 2001, the community took its first steps to privatization. Greenwood Development intends to enroll 450 golf members, making one of the two courses at Palmetto Hall for members only. The private course rotates so that members can experience both courses while enjoying a private retreat at a semi-private golf facility. The clubhouse is scheduled to undergo major renovations to further enhance the private-club atmosphere for its members.
And although the golf courses are frequently sited as the community’s most notable calling card, residents say it’s the neighbors who make the neighborhood. Laurie Bunting appreciates the hearty “mom and kid network” that she and others find in this community.
Generally, members of the golf club are also neighbors – the kind who share putters, compare deer feeding preferences, or water the plants when one is away on vacation. Men interested in golf, regardless of handicap, can join in Wednesday morning rounds when several kinds of games are played: better ball; match play; individual medal play; etc. On fifth Wednesdays, now referred to as “Funny, Funky, Fifth Wednesday,” they play a round in the Ryder Cup format. The small entry fee is returned to the winners on the day of the game with a portion set aside for the annual “Spring Steakout,” held poolside in the plantation’s barbeque area.
Palmetto Hall residents enjoy getting together, whether it’s for an informal evening of Bunco (a trendy dice game) or for bridge. The club offers a casual dinner family night once a month as well as a more conventional members’ dinner night at least once a month. Residents can celebrate special occasions and holidays with their friends and neighbors at the clubhouse when they sign up for the special events planned by Events Coordinator Julie Miller.
Palmetto Hall also has an active women’s golf group as well as a social group that offers many opportunities for neighbors to meet and enjoy one another’s company and common interests. One committee, called Southern Comfort, coordinates volunteers who want to contribute assistance to neighbors in times of need. All residents receive newsletters, informing them of opportunities to participate in a number of ongoing community outreach programs. After a week of work and play, residents get the skinny on what good things have happened by attending happy hour each Friday night at the clubhouse.
Palmetto Hall has a unique combination of age-diverse residents. Retirees wisely choose to walk, jog or bike after the school buses have come in and out of the plantation. Its location near the public library, Main Street shopping area, Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, Hilton Head Airport and, of course, Wal-Mart, is a major convenience to all residents. But it is the families with school-aged children who enthusiastically appreciate the community’s close proximity to the schools and Island Recreation Center.
Palmetto Hall now offers its residents a Premier Golf Membership with well-appointed privileges. Residents can also choose a social membership, which translates to a friendly neighborhood, complemented by a group of community-minded neighbors who enjoy the golf courses, a pool and lighted tennis courts. It’s a real deal for everyone.
