Mariner's Cove, Hilton Head

Once upon a time, there was a well-planned community Mariner's Cove, located just off the swing bridge to Hilton Head Island. This quiet little community soon became Hilton Head Island’s best keep secret. Visitors were in a hurry to get to the island so they could make the most of their vacation, so they didn’t take the time to notice this community.

Now, a few decades later, Mariner’s Cove Club is making its mark on the map. Located on Blue Heron Point Road, Mariner’s Cove Club is actually located on its own island, called Hog’s Island. Folks are always stunned when they realize this community has been around for quite a while, though they didn’t know it even existed.

Mariner’s Cove Club residents Rickey and Susan Hicks said they really enjoy the privacy their home affords. Originally from Atlanta, the Hicks came to Hilton Head for about 20 years and always said they would be glad to move here if the opportunity ever arose, which it did about three years ago. Susan had found Mariner’s Cove Club and had fallen in love with it. They sold their home in Atlanta, but unfortunately there were no homes for sale in Mariner’s Cove Club. But, it didn’t take long for one to become available. Rickey and Susan bought the villa and now call it home.

Rickey said that many of the community’s owners are also residents. On top of this, a large number of owner-occupants have been in the community for many years. This has helped residents get to know each other well, and has helped them become a close-knit bunch. Rickey said they really “look out for each other,” and that seems to have become more of an exception than a rule when it comes to neighbors.

Rickey said he and Susan were immediately wowed by the unparallel sunset views from their new home, and continue to be impressed three years later. In fact, the stunning views of the sunset, Calibogue Sound, and the Intercostal Waterway were what really helped them make the decision to call Mariner’s Cove Club home.

Rickey enthusiastically described the view from his home as “pleasant and peaceful.” He says the “brilliant orange sky coming in over the water, then casting through the trees behind the villas is absolutely calming.” He laughingly said that the pool is fun for everyone and the boat dock is a “great plus.” When speaking about the boat dock, Rickey was quick to add that there is even a table on which to clean your fish before you take your catch home. These little “added touches,” according to Rickey, are what make his neighborhood truly special.

In fact, Rickey was so happy with their new home, he wanted to make sure he could be involved in important decision making and have his voice heard. So, he became the Mariner’s Cove Club board president, and now he is assured that his opinion makes a difference, and works hard to make sure others’ voices are heard, too. Rickey believes that by working together, residents can keep the pleasant neighborhood they all enjoy.

Douglas Skelly, with High Tide Management, agrees. He is pleased with the community and said the privacy offered by Mariner’s Cove Club is a “huge asset.” Another huge plus for the community is how close to nature residents truly are. Not only are the Intracoastal Waterway and Calibogue Sound close by, but dolphins frolic in these waters and many types of birds call Mariner’s Cove Club home. This close proximity to nature, with unobstructed, expansive water views, adds to the tranquility that Mariner’s Cove Club residents were searching for.

Douglas says residents also wanted to have enjoyable recreational activities. So, the amenities for Mariner’s Cove Club were carefully planned to help residents and their guests get a lot of enjoyment of their free time. A swimming pool and two tennis courts provide ample recreational opportunities, along with an open area surrounded by the marsh on the Intracoastal Waterway. Residents can often be spotted in this area throwing a Frisbee or playing with their pets. The floating boat dock is a convenient addition for water enthusiasts.

A true diamond in the rough, Mariner’s Cove Club is an intimate and charming community. Its location is ideal for offering wonderful views in a peaceful setting, yet is close to all of the conveniences of Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, and Savannah. Doug Skelly puts it in perspective by saying, “Living on Hog’s Island is like being in hog heaven!”
