Cross Winds, Hilton Head

Think of it as someplace new that seems like someplace old. At least that was what developer Steve Anthony envisioned his when he set out to develop his parcel of 30 or so acres off Marshland Road in 1999. His vision of a distinguished, small-scale community began when he and his company, Legacy Construction, set out to make Crosswinds a reality.

Cross Winds gated community, located almost exactly in the middle of the island, has only 64 single-family home sites. This community gives its residents the best of what the Lowcountry has to offer in terms of ambiance, with pristine marshes and deepwater views of the Broad Creek, moshis-covered oaks, nature paths, and a community dock. A glorious morning sunrise, a playful otter swimming in the creek or a deer scurrying though the woods – it’s most likely to happen at Crosswinds.

Clearly, the homes in this neighborhood were designed to blend together with the splendid environment. When submitting home plans for ARB approval, owners must keep in mind elements of the South’s traditional architectural heritage. To accommodate buyers, Legacy Construction has several custom home plans available. Plans typically feature the Charleston look, clapboard homes with shutters, screened-in porches up and down, metal roofs, and white picket fences.

“We were instantly attracted to Crosswinds,” said resident Trey Bishop, referring to his wife and children. “The four of us love to kayak, and on a full-moon high tide, we’ve been able to come right up to our backyard.”

To preserve privacy and security, the neighborhood has an electronic security gate at its entrance. Residents can purchase a remote control to make coming and going easier. The small-sized community pool and playground provides an attractive, intimate common area to share when family or friends come to visit. Since its completion in Spring 2002, Crosswinds residents also have the benefit of a community day dock, which offers superb opportunities to engage in worthy pastimes such as fishing and crabbing.

“It’s a great little neighborhood,” said Nancy Wilson of The Dawson Team. “I think of Crosswinds as one of the island’s best opportunities to live the traditional Lowcountry lifestyle.” According to Wilson, currently there are 21 lots for sale ranging from $94,900 to $429,000. Developer Steve Anthony has four waterfront lots on the market ranging from $279,900 to $299,900. A waterfront home recently sold for $880,000.

Crosswinds’ easy-going atmosphere and central location adds to this community’s appeal. What used to be a part of Indigo Run and a trailer park is now a quaint neighborhood that stands apart from the crowd, while at the same time blending in with the scenery. It’s ideal for anyone who might want to get away without being away from everything.
